Opposites attract doesn’t always gel in terms of music, but the combo of SUMAC and Moor Mother may be an exception to the rule. The brutal metal act and the spoken word poet and sometimes rapper may seem like a strange pairing, but as they blend their equally avant-garde sounds, we’re treated to something truly unique during a time when so much feels stale and repetitive.
The singles leading up to the new album from Maria Somerville showcase lush production, dreamy vocals, and heavy, thick guitar strokes that congeal to form a plume of haze that makes her music sound mysterious and magical. The recordings go back to 2021, but this album sounds fresh and rich with detail that should be a perfect soundtrack as things begin the blossom.
By now, Deerhoof might as well be considered classic rock in the world of indie as they’ve been creating daring, and adventurous music for decades. Their latest record is yet another big statement that finds the band continuously finding new ways to reinvent their somewhat simplistic, but forever memorable experimental pop sound.
For the second time, Chicago outfits Natural Information Society and Bitchin Bajas have joined forces to bring their wildly expressionistic sounds together for something that may seem iffy on the surface, but once again proves to be a sonic pairing that somehow feels natural and meant to be.
Last year, Djrum gave us an excellent EP and now he’s back with a full-length (his fist in six years) that continues the journey of expressive minimal tracks that morph and shift into dance-floor jams showcasing the technical achievements that have made Djrum an impressive artist to follow.
While they still might be best known for their work in Big Thief, Adrianne Lenker has put in the work on her solo albums to be just as big of a name on her own. After releasing her excellent record Bright Future last year, Lenker returns this week with a massive live album that collects over forty tracks from across both her work in her main band in addition to solo numbers and unreleased tracks as well.
This week, the sisters HAIM played an intimate hometown gig and announced their fourth album would be coming in June. They also played new songs at the show including their latest single “Down to be Wrong.” It’s a classic HAIM tune that’s full of great energy and the emotional pulls you’ve come to love from the band.
The first new song from Lorde in four years is here and this time she’s taking us to the club. While Solar Power might not have had the juice many were hoping for, this go around she’s teamed up with the latest sensation in pop song-writing, Dan Nigro, and “What Was That” feels like the song many have been begging Lorde to make since the days of Melodrama. Are we back? It sure seems like it!
Next week, industrial dance-punks Model/Actriz will drop their sophomore record and the last single features more of their sinister, metallic melodies and bruising rhythms that slither like a steely serpent. “Diva” does the work of calling people to the dance-floor, but this one is decked out in cold concrete rather than the flashing disco lights you might expect. It’s a twisted take on house and made for a noise crowd.
On Rocky Top Ballads, the artist known as Fine brought trip-hop vibes to ambient R&B moods and delivered a killer record. This week Fine dropped a new single that continues their stylized minimal sound and gives us another brooding track that further defines their sound.
Inspired by classic American surf-rock, the Korean based band Say Sue Me make some pretty stellar guitar rock that stretches beyond surf music in and towards twisted psych-rock and that is every-present on their excellent new song “In This Mess,” a track full of swirling guitar haze and blown-out rhythms.
