As we wrap up August, we’re gifted with another stacked week of new albums and some singles from heavy hitters. Nick Cave is back with the Bad Seeds for their eighteenth studio album, Wild God. It’s their first album in five years. Cave has remarked that it’s a joyous record and hopes the feelings resonate with the listeners as much as it does with the band.
Ty Segall just released his most recent album earlier this year, but this week he’s back with Love Rudiments, a tribute to his first love, the drums. The album features a full array of percussion instruments, from the trap kit to timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums.
Channelling the big hooks of ‘90s alternative, Enumclaw are back with their sophomore record, Home In Another Life. Capturing more of their straight-forward approach to powerful, distorted rock tunes, the band has sharpened their sound a bit while still making grand, sweeping statements that celebrate the joy of being in a rock band.
Surprise! There’s a new album from Duster out today. Released without any advance notice, just like its predecessor, In Dreams is the first release from the group since the departure of founding member Jason Albertini, but it still remains true to the band’s core, iconic sound.
Electronic artist Tycho has built quite a hardcore fanbase over the years, his post-rock inspired approach to ambient, downtempo music drawing in a wide crowd. Today he’s shared his first album in four years and focuses largely on beats, breaks, and rhythms all under an ‘80s neon sheer.
‘90s shoegaze band Swervedriver have a new EP coming soon but today they’ve reissued their compilation album Doremi Faso Latido on vinyl for the first time and have added it to streaming services as well. Featuring outtakes and demos, it’s a solid collection from one of the genre’s prime examples.
I can’t imagine you’re a music fan who hasn’t heard that news that in 2025, the brothers Gallagher will bury the hatchet and reunite as Oasis for some massive shows in Ireland and the U.K. with a world tour to follow. The news coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of their epic debut album Definitely Maybe which is celebrated yet again today with yet another deluxe edition.
Back in January, The Smile released their excellent second album Wall of Eyes. This week they announced their third album will be out in October and shared two new songs, “Zero Sum” and “Foreign Spies.” The first is a freewheeling electronic tune that swirls in a buzzing haze, enveloping Thom Yorke’s vocals in a cyclone of humming melodies while the later is an energetic and twitching guitar number that spirals with knotty, frenetic vibes as it spins a web of tangled rhythms.
Post-rock titans Godspeed You! Black Emperor will release their eighth full-length album in a few months and our first preview is the sprawling closing track “GREY RUBBLE - GREEN SHOOTS.” Featuring signature elements of the band like droning guitars and swelling strings, it’s a cautious track that operates with stellar restraint while still evoking massive power.
It doesn’t feel like it’s been so long, but the last album from Caribou dropped in February 2020, just before the COVID lockdowns began. In the years since, Dan Snaith has released a record under his moniker Daphni and played plenty of gigs around the world, but now he’s back as his main act. “Come Find Me” is another hard hitting dance number that recalls classic techno and house vibes and is sure to get things going on the dance floor.
Kim Gordon’s The Collective is one of the year’s best albums. This week she teamed up with Model Home for a new collaborative track called “razzamatazz” that takes on minimal droning effects layered over a tricked-out beat that gives it focus while still remaining rough around the edges.
Next month will finally bring us the new album from Jamie xx. It’s been a long-time coming, but Jamie has stated that his latest single “Dafodil” is the track that helped him get back in the groove and build the confidence to make another album. This is a sleeker tune that slowly comes together with shuffling pianos and minimal disco beats.
Glam rock hero and all around pop music luminary Bryan Ferry has a career retrospective box set coming later this year and it features his first new solo song in a decade. This week we learned that the song, “Star,” started out as a Nine Inch Nails track from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and are both are credited with the drumming and programming on the song. It retains the moods you’d expect from the industrial powerhouse and adds Ferry’s flare for ‘80s synth-pop and heavy electronica.
