With only one full week left to go in 2024, I present to you the best song and albums of the year. Next week, I’ll share the best EPs, live albums, and compilations to wrap up the year end coverage. If this were a typical week, I’d be talking all about the latest from SZA and Sault as well as the excellent new compilation from Aphex Twin all of which I think would be in contention for their respective lists had they not come out with practically no time remaining in the year.

I know that ranking art is rather pointless and it’s easy to question how you can compare a great pop record to an awesome metal album, but I look at these lists as a great way to explore and discover new things that might have otherwise slipped your radar. Pitting art against each other isn’t the point and releasing music shouldn’t be a competition, but I hope that the lists below introduce you to something new that you’ll enjoy or validate your favorites as well!

As always, I implore you to do your best to support the artists below or the ones you love that I didn’t include by purchasing their work or going to see them in concert when possible. I know streaming makes it seem like all of this should be at our fingertips whenever we want it, but it’s also important to remember that a lot of these artists should be supported for their work as well.
