The slow march of February continues on and this week is a little light on content. Emo/post-hardcore band Anxious hails from Connecticut and this week they’re dropping their latest album which has the big hooks and choruses you’d expect from one of the biggest newcomers to the scene. They’ve been steadily building their reputation for a few years and this could be the album that sets them off to a new level.
In 2023, Trevor Powers released his first album under his Youth Lagoon moniker in nearly a decade and after sharing a few singles, he’s back now with another record that captures a lot of the sounds of his own youth after he was inspired by a trip home that unlocked a lot of memories from childhood.
For many, Q Lazzarus is known for “Goodbye Horses,” a song from Jonathan Demme’s Married to the Mob that took on a whole new life when Demme featured it again in Silence of the Lambs. Somehow, a proper studio record from Q never came to be, but now a new documentary on the singer features a score of the same name that carries the distinction of being her first and only full-length release.
Last year, Wishy released their debut record and it dug deep on the blown-out, fuzzy rock of ‘90s nostalgia. They’ve now announced a new EP is coming soon (it’ll be paired with their debut EP as well) and the new single “Fly,” while sadly not a Sugar Ray cover is still a solid jam of buzzy alt-pop.
One of my favorite albums of 2024 belonged to Hurray for the Riff Raff and this week Alynda Segarra dropped a new single called “Pyramid Scheme.” While still in the same country range as last years’ The Past is Still Alive, it stands as its own and makes for another strong addition to a set list in the band’s current era.
For her first record since 2019, Maria Somerville has signed with 4AD and made what sounds like a perfectly succinct album for the label’s catalogue as previewed by the new single “Garden” which take atmospheric dream-pop and covers it in a dense hazy of bleary shoegaze melodies.
Recently, Wendy Eisenberg has been touring with Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, but she also released a great solo record last year. This week she shared a new tune that naturally highlights her guitar skills and her fragile vocals make for a stunning compliment to her intricate playing style.
