In the first full week of 2025, things are starting off with quite the band. Following her much lauded debut album Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain is back with her highly anticipated follow-up record Perverts. After seeing her at last year’s New York edition of All Things Go, she made it seem like she was ready for some time away from the stage and this new album presents a lot of new styles that will be interesting to see her represent in a live setting when she returns.
Amped-up punk rockers Lambrini Girls have the high intensity showmanship to make their live performances top-notch and now they’re ready to unleash a new record that speaks to the volumes they can hit on stage.
It’s been five years since Noah Lennox dropped a solo album as Panda Bear and soon he’ll give us his latest full-length, but this week he shared the record’s second single and it’s once again a solid jam that’s enriched with his hallmark dub motions and hints of Tropicália.
Following her breakthrough album Jubilee, Japanese Breakfast is back with a new album and it’s lead off by the soft and delicate lead single “Orlando in Love.” More intimate and subdued than some of her previous tracks, it’s an slight glimpse into what could be in store for the artist’s next chapter.
Scotland’s Mogwai have been pioneers in post-rock for over a quarter of a century and as they gear up to release yet another record in their staggering discography, they continue to prevail in their attempts at grandiose rock tracks that carry momentum and throttle the pedal at just the right moments.
After returning with Spiral in 2021, DARKSIDE are back yet again with another new album and now they’ve enlisted Tlacael Esparza to round them our as a trio. “S.N.C” pushes their boundaries even further and capitalizes on some funky synths and processed vocals that add supreme texture and introduce a whole new trajectory for the group.
Last year, James Brandon Lewis teamed-up with The Messthetics (aka the rhythm section of Fugazi) for one of the best albums of 2024. Now Lewis is back with his own trio and has shared another single from their upcoming record. It’s a groovy tune that follows a devoted bassline and extra bit of funk.
Mathy post-punk band Squid are set to release their new record in early February and their new jam is another blazing tune that defies convention and looks for every possible path to explore new territory all while wound within the band’s tight groove.
