A break from the heat has finally come to the east coast and with it also comes a bit of a break in the onslaught of new music. Still, this week has some big names making awaited returns. Earlier this year, Childish Gambino gave us his finalized version of Altavista and this week he’s dropping Bando Stone & The New World, Donald Glover’s final project under the Gambino moniker.
Indie twee group Los Campesinos! have been highly influential on some of the more up and comping bands that bring the urgency of emo with classic indie rock hallmarks and they’re back to chime in on a scene and sound that that helped create.
In 2021, Dr. Dog called it quits from touring, but said they’d continue on as a band. Today they follow-up on that promise with their first new studio album since 2018 which marks the longest gap between albums in their career.
After they quietly dropped off some festivals a few years ago, I assumed Japandroids had quietly called it quits. Well, this week they announced one final victory lap with a fourth and final album due this fall. The first single “Chicago” is a classic sounding Japandroids tune with high-flying riffs and the whoa-oh-oh attitude that begs for a sweaty sing-a-long moment.
Noise rock quartet Chat Pile pulverized the world with their forceful debut record God’s Country and this fall they’ll follow it up with a punishing new record that seems to sum up the current, desperate state of worldly affairs. The lead single “I am Dog Now” is a guttural slog of blistering heat full of primal energy that demands attention.
Following the untimely death of Mimi Sparhark, the band Low came to a sad end. However her partner Alan Sparhark is continuing on with a solo career that seems to keep the spirit of his late band alive with minimal compositions of beautiful noise and his first single gives us an early taste of what he’s cooked up for his solo debut.
Youth has always been the fifth member of The Linda Lindas but as they slowly edge out of that phase of their career, they’ve announced their sophomore record and the first single still hones in on their young spirit of rambunctious, yet sophisticated pop-punk that signals a great future ahead of them.
Earlier in the year, Wild Pink released a great three-song EP that took their dreamy guitar splendor on an extended journey of grandeur and they’re set to follow it up with a full length later in the year. The first single is another glowing track that highlights their sprawling sound with wondrous success.
