It shouldn’t be too surprising to learn that there wasn’t a lot of new music this week, but even with a small collection of new tunes, there are still some great highlights. On the pop side of the spectrum, Kesha’s latest is simply called . (PERIOD) and it feels like the satisfying victory lap that we all know she really deserves.
Glenn Donaldson doesn’t know how to slow down. Having written over 200 songs over the past few years, the output from his project The Reds, Pinks and Purples is non-stop and this week he’s back with more of his melancholy jangle-pop that brushes with nostalgia over bright and pretty melodies.
Featuring members of Animal Collective, Geologist (aka Brian Weitz), GWAR (Jim Thomson), and Marc Minsker, Motherfuckers JMB & Co. aren’t quite a supergroup, but it’s a band comprised of members who know the ins and outs of experimental music and are sure to make something unlike you’ve ever heard before.
Following a string a great albums, Nilüfer Yanya dropped a new EP earlier in the week and it’s a quick dose of her stellar work that still finds new ways to make her work interesting and something very much her own. Striving towards great pop moments while still finding strident grooves of compelling arrangements.
Two years ago, Foo Fighters released their first new album following the tragic death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins and this week the band shared their first new song since that record and the news of Dave Grohl fathering a child outside of his marriage. It’s a slow burning power ballad that you can tell will come to life when the band adds it to their set list and it still finds the powerful range that the band has been playing into for the past three decades.
It’s been 11 years since the last album from Chicago Underground Duo but this week the pair announced their new record and shared the bumping new tune, “Click Song.” Once again fusing elements of modern jazz with ambient textures and hints of post-rock glory, it’s a satisfying and inviting tune that draws you in for close attention.
Jason Dungan has been making music under the name Blue Lake for quite some time and after dropping Weft EP at the start of the year, he’s announced a new, full-band record this coming fall. Embracing the full sound of a band helped Dungan bring his sketches to life and the lead single “Cut Paper” is an inventive tune that pushes the music towards something full, deep, and rich.
