As rising temperatures and tropical storms begin to run supreme in the summer these days, we also find ourselves in the midst of a slow period for new music. Vince Staples is the big name this week with his self-titled record dropping only a few weeks after its announcement. Also on the radar are the new ones from The Goon Sax and Twin Shadow.
The iconic songwriting duo of Jimmy Jim and Terry Lewis also have their own record out this week which is filled with guests and should see some pretty stellar collaborations. We also get the super deluxe edition of the soundtrack to Almost Famous which has countless new tracks in store for the movie’s 20th anniversary.
Courtney Barnett announced her third solo record this week and dropped the lead single “Rae Street” while Deafheaven push forward on their path away from black metal and towards dream-pop with their latest, “The Gnashing.”
Angel Olsen continues her streak of new music as well. Following 2019’s All Mirrors, 2020’s Whole New Mess, and this year’s box set Song of the Lark and Other Far Memories, plus song of the year contender “Like I Used To” with Sharon Van Etten, she announced a new EP full of ‘80s covers which hits later this summer. Not to be out done, Sufjan Stevens, who released two records last year as well as an ambient collection earlier in 2021, announced yet another new project, this time with Angelo De Augustine.
