June came in hot last week to help usher in the summer, but this week pumps the breaks slightly, while still giving us some gems. The “we’ll sleep when we’re dead” rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are back with yet another record in their almighty catalogue which includes over twenty-five studio albums (the band only formed in 2010). Phantom Island was recorded during the same sessions as last year’s Flight b741 and includes rich orchestrations.
On her third album for the legendary jazz label Impulse, Brandee Younger has inherited Alice Coltrane’s harp and takes us on an odyssey of sounds for her new record. Channeling spiritual jazz, gospel, and traditional R&B, Younger embraces her detailed sounds for something freeing and absolutely pure.
The incomparable New Young is no stranger to backing bands and last year he formed his latest, The Chrome Hearts. Today they’re releasing their first album, Talking To The Trees and it features Neil’s unmistakable sound, even as things start to sound more worn-in and faded after all the years. Young’s voice isn’t what it once was, but even with his ragged words, his guitar roars on.
One of last year’s best shoegaze records came from the band Dummy and this week they’re back with a new remix album that gives their peers a chance to makeover their songs with new grooves and feels.
Another one of last year’s best albums was the first new record from The Cure in sixteen years and they’re also back with a new remix album. This one features a lot of groups that have sited the band as direct influences and gives more fresh, new perspectives on these instantly classic tunes.
The last album from David Byrne was 2018’s American Utopia which went on to spawn a residency on Broadway that was captured on film by Spike Lee for HBO. Now Byrne has announced a new album will drop this year and the lead single is a typical jaunting pop tune that soars with the joy and emotion you’ve come to expect from the legend and proves that his touch for songwriting is still sharp.
The line between Daphni and Caribou, the two main musical monikers from Dan Snaith, continue to blur on the first’s new song, “Sad Piano House.” More in-line with the high BPMs of Daphni’s more dance-oriented style, it sounds very much of the same mindset as last year’s album from Caribou, proving that at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter how Snaith chooses to release new music because no matter the name, it’s sure to inspire a groove on the dance floor.
Earlier this year, Japanese Breakfast dropped her highly anticipated new album and this week she’s shared another new song, this time from the soundtrack to the upcoming movie Materialists. The tune is a charming number that’s in the wheelhouse of Zauner’s recent material and plays as the credits roll in the movie.
Irish rockers Cardinals released a really great EP at the end of 2024 and this week they shared a new single along with some upcoming tour dates. This is a ripping new tune that lets their sound really lock into place, showing their power and panache for classic alt-rock.
Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin will release their third installment of their Ghosted series in August and this week we got our first sample via “Yek.” It’s the expected twisting and contorting jam from these three that finds them all firmly in-sync as they warp their sounds through tight weaves of melodic grooves that hypnotize and dazzle through stimulating rhythms.
One of the best songs of 2024 was Kim Gordon’s monumental “BYE BYE.” A throbbing industrial banger, Gordon has reworked the tune, keeping the original instrumental stems, but changing up the lyrics for words she deems on the verge of disappearance in 2025. Now armed with a new message, the song still holds the same, stunning power.
