It’s hard to believe that we’re about to hit the half-way mark of 2025, but with summer in full swing, it certainly feels like time is chugging along. With nearly six months behind us, today brings one of the most anticipated pop albums of the year: Lorde’s Virgin. After the mixed results of Solar Power, this appears to be Lorde’s comeback and two of the early singles suggest she’s entering her club era with ultra hyper-pop jams of MDMA-fueled tracks on which she collaborated with rising songwriter Dan Nigro.
Earlier this year, Lizzo dropped some new rock-inspired singles that seemed to be part of her comeback campaign, but even after an SNL appearance, it didn’t land with quite the splash she may have hoped for. Today she’s releasing a new mix-tape (neither single is on it) which has also flown under the radar. Only time will tell what the future looks like for Lizzo, but here’s to hoping she can regain her footing and climb back to the top.
Mixing the heaviness of shoegaze with the slowcore spirit, Greet Death make big sounding songs and their new record once again finds them in their groove of eardrum rattling power. Bursting at the seams, the band blazes forward with maximum force that is equally as intense as it is approachable.
While there’s still no word on a new album from post-rock greats Tortoise, their single from earlier in the year has gotten the deluxe remix treatment from the likes of Saul Williams, Broken Social Scene, Makaya McCraven, and more on a new EP. If you think this would get repetitive, think again as each remix offers a new vision to this already excellent jam.
Extensive reissue campaigns can feel tiring, especially when the artist releasing them already has a massive discography and in some cases, it’s easy to ask the question “why are these ‘lost’ albums all of sudden seeing the light of day?” I get it, but the treasure trove of gems packed into this massive box set from Bruce Springsteen does seem to be part of the rare occasion where taking the deep dive is certainly worth it for devoted fans, but even casual listeners are likely to find something that sparks an interest.
It’s been a few years since the last album from Animal Collective, but this week the band shared a new, one-off, single that channels their poppier side with big, buoyant beats and their glitched-out melodies. It’s a nice holdover while we wait for their next move and recalls some of their glory days of yore with its frenetic rhythms and processed vocals.
Space-rock outfit The Besnard Lakes can create swells of guitar epics like the best of them and this week they announced a new record which is led by the seismic single, “In Hollywood.” It’s another towering tune in their catalogue that moves at an unhurried pace as walls of guitar grows around it.
The new album from Wet Leg is imminent and following the previous singles, this week the band shared one final preview of the new record. “davina mccall” pumps the brakes and serves up a mellow tune with dreamy melodies and sweeping rhythms that moves it along at a chilled speed,
Last year’s Rocky Top Ballads from Fine was one of the best debut albums of the year and after sharing a new single a few months back, the avant-pop artist has returned yet again with a new tune called “Run.” Written and produced by herself, it’s another sultry jam of wispy down-tempo pop that goes for something bigger than we’ve heard from her in the past, making waves for what could come next.
Irish group SPRINTS dropped their surging new song “Descartes” this week and it’s a roaring blast of urgent and angular guitar rock. Hitting with sharp, gnarled riffs, the band brings their post-punk energy for a charging tune that strikes as one of their most rushing and brutalist songs to date.
For fans of experimental music, the new trio of Bill Orcutt, Steve Shelley, and Ethan Miller is nothing but great news. On the lead single from their upcoming debut, they bring together blasts of noise and restrained grooves that results in something ragged, raw, and empowering. It’s a righteous track that has them all exuding their powers in a total triumph.
