Reporting live from Primavera Sound in Barcelona, this week’s Gold Soundz is a condensed version, but there are still some big features that are definitely worth your time and the set ups for summer.
Already the biggest hardcore band in the world, Turnstile are finally back with the follow-up to the world conquering GLOW ON and this time around, they’re once again expanding their sound way beyond what typical hardcore entails. Embracing elements of dream-pop, funk, disco, and of course their classic sound, the Baltimore quartet are ready to take things to the next level and continue to push the boundaries of what it means to be a heavy band.
For the first time in 24 years, there’s a new album from Pulp and it’s set be another classic record of disco-infused Britpop that is sure to have you moving and grooving. After hitting the reunion circuit over a decade ago, the band’s live show has maintained their unrivaled energy from the ‘90s and these new songs are sure to help reinforce their place and bring them the recognition stateside that they deserved from the beginning.
After a string of EPs, Lifeguard are finally dropping their debut album and the lead singles are here to suggest that this band is one you’ll be hearing from for a long time to come. Their speedy punk take on quintessential indie rock is infectious and primed for the big times making them one of the most exciting new bands of the moment.
Last summer, Sabrina Carpenter took over the world with her smash hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Now, she seems poised to do it again as she drops “Manchild” which she’ll most likely play at her headlining set tonight in Barcelona.
Earlier this year, Panda Bear dropped his excellent new album Sinister Grift and it features the single “Defense” which has Cindy Lee on guitar. This week, Noah Lennox made the single’s b-side, “Virginia Tech,” available on streaming services and it’s another great electronic jam that features his Animal Collective bandmate Deakin on percussion and production from Oneohtrix Point Never.
A lot has changed for Big Thief since the release of their last album. Their bass player parted ways with the group and the remaining members all have released solo records. Now, the band is back and ready to release their new album at the end of the summer. Our first preview is the gliding single “Incomprehensible” which is a welcome return to the band’s stunning sound.
