Summer is here and it’s starting off with a big ol’ dance party. Building up the hype with sets at Boiler Room and Lot Radio, Charli XCX is finally dropping her new album Brat today and the record is hallmark to 2000’s club music, the blogosphere, and Tumblr-era aesthetics. There are urgent, pulsating synths, hard electronic beats, and it’s auto-tuned to the max. There’s no doubt it’ll be soundtracking beach parties and raves all summer long.
After years of rising as one of the world’s most promising new DJs and already making a name for herself as one of the coolest names in the underground, Peggy Gou is finally dropping her debut album and after the unexpected, yet wildly deserved, success of singles like “Starry Night” and “(It Goes Like) Nanana” this could be what finally propels her to the next level.
Also calling people to the dance floor will be the latest album from Kaytranada who is back with a new solo release the comes hot off the heels from last year’s collab with Aminé. It’s got guest spots from Childish Gambino, Tinashe, PinkPanthress, and more.
On the nu-disco and electro-pop front, France’s L’Impératrice return with Pulsar, their third album and first since 2021. This week they dropped the final single “Any Way” which features wonderful guest vocals from Maggie Rogers, perfect for those warm, pink-clouded nights ahead.
Bringing the heat with blasts of shredding guitar, CANDY unleash their newest album of punishing hardcore featuring collaborations from Aaron Melnick of Integrity, Justice Tripp of Angel Du$t and Trapped Under Ice, David Gagliardi of Trash Talk, and Marisa Shriar of Fleshwater. No doubt it will go hard.
David Bazan once commented that he would just go by his actual name, but more people listen when he records and releases music as Pedro the Lion. Regardless of the name, the new album Santa Cruz arrives today filling the need for more of his consistently solid tunes.
After releasing both their debut and sophomore records last year, Bar Italia have made another quick return with a surprise new EP that dropped earlier in the week. It features the previous single “sounds like you had to be there” as well as tracks from the same sessions as The Twits.
It’s been nearly ten years since Jamie xx released one of the best albums of the last decade, but this September he’ll finally return with his sophomore solo record, In Waves. Along with this week’s announcement, he dropped the new single “Treat Each Other Right.”
A new single from Caribou kicked things off this week with its clubby, UK Garage flairs (stuff you might expect from Dan Snaith’s other project, Daphni) that make it a full force on the floor. The track was arranged by Caribou and Keiran Hebden, aka Four Tet.
And then there’s the latest from Floating Points, another track that recalls the classic techno elements that have been part of his recent live sets and singles, fitting into his comfort zone of dense beats and euphoric grooves. SBTRKT dropped his first album in seven years in 2023 and this week he shared a new song of hard-banging beats called “BET YOU NEVER.”
For the first time in 26 years, there’s a new record from noise-rock pioneers The Jesus Lizard. Led by the new single “Hide & Seek,” the band stated that the new album exists due to the joy and excitement they get from playing each other and the track confirms that nothing about their sound feels forced, but rather like the logical progression of what a tried and true band can sound like nearly three decades since they last hit record in a studio.
Last week, Soccer Mommy played an intimate solo show in New York City and debuted a few new songs. This week, Sophie Allison shared the studio version of the intimate tune “Lost,” a contemplative number that sits amongst her best.
Next month, Cassandra Jenkins will release her latest album My Light, My Destroyer. The record’s third single, “Petco,” adds some alt-rock guitar vibes to her usual ethereal elements, giving the song some muscle that flexes with an earned purpose. It drives with a steady gaze and hearty undertone that enriches the experience.
Even though her massive hit “Espresso” has only hit number four on the charts (and I use “only” lightly), the track is a top contender for Song of the Summer. Nevertheless, Sabrina Carpenter has decided to drop the next single from her upcoming album and it’s a country-leaning tune that shifts away from the synth-pop glitz of her current smash.
