Welcome to May! This week we are lead by industrial dance-punks Model/Actriz and their wicked new album Pirouette which is a prime example of noise meets rave music that feels electrifying and sinister all at once. Following their killer debut record, they turn up the heat on this one and make a name for themselves as one of the most promising new bands who are on the verge of becoming bigger than you’d probably imagine for a band making this kind of music.
The lead singles from the new Car Seat Headrest album have been long journeys that aren’t typical for the band and while they can really stretch out, the shorter and to the point tunes are more in line with the band’s sweet spot and still prove that when they get down to business and cut through the noise, they’re still an act worth following.
Elusive electronic act Two Shell made some waves recently with their early singles and an EP. Now they’re here with a new full-length record that focuses on their twisted, rave-forward dance tunes and looks to elevate their brand to one of the premier names in their genre of glitched-out electronica.
James Krivchenia is best known as the drummer of Big Thief and while that project tends to lean towards the more experimental side of indie rock and folk music, on his own, Krivchenia goes even further into the abstract with more jazz-influenced jams that bring about more unconventional structures for something much more free flowing and loose.
Also the techno side, Anthony Naples has dropped some real bangers as of late and this week he’s got a new album that will have you grooving hard on the dance floor as big beats and minimal house techniques make waves throughout. It’s a great record that goes for an ambient club vibes and really nails it, a delightful dance floor that never goes too hard, but never lets up either.
The debut EP from The Pennys is a quaint and successful collection of lo-fi jangle-pop tunes that merge rough and ragged recordings with otherwise buoyant melodies and power pop pinnace. Self-described as “occult heartbreak pop,” these homespun tracks are intimate with details and covered with fizzy tape hiss that’s sweet, yet grainy all at the same time.
New Jersey’s Real Estate have been supplying some of the best standard indie rock over the past fifteen years and this week they announced a surprise collection of songs they’ve recorded throughout their career that never found a home on any of their full-lengths, but stand-up as solid works of their now rather classic sound.
The debut album from Hotline TNT was one of the best releases of 2023 and their sophomore record is shaping up to hit that same high bar. “Candle,” the band’s second single from this upcoming album is another track that bursts with huge riffs and wall of sound guitar that smothers with alt-rock glory and shoegaze haze. It’s totally lit.
It’s been three years since we last heard new music from The Beths, but this week the band announced that they’d signed with ANTI- Records and shared a new song that lines up with all of their best work. It’s a rich song that’s full of big hooks, urgent melodies, and cruising rhythms that make for a rocking blast of good times.
After dropping their debut single earlier this year, Crystal Sting have shared their second track and it’s another touchstone of early 2000s IDM with a mix of folktronica and breakbeats. With a shuffling rhythm over twinkling piano, it’s a bubbly tune that’s both blissful and also entrancing, drawing you in with with twitchy glitch-pop aesthetics and doubles down on their staying power as one of electronic music’s new exciting voices.
It’s unclear what lies ahead with the new Turnstile album that’s due in June. After making it to the big leagues with Glow On, the band seemed to lean in even harder on their pop sensibilities with their last single “NEVER ENOUGH.” This week, the band delivered two more tracks from their new album and they are opposite ends of the Turnstile spectrum. “SEEIN’ STARS” presents a disco-funk side of the group that steers firmly away from their past while “BIRDS” recalls some of their harder moments with blistering blast beats and slashing riffs.
When Stereolab announced their first album in fifteen years, they gave us a quick disco-pop tune for the lead single. This week, the band has shared a sprawling seven minute tune that grinds hard on their classic motorik rhythm and finds the band back in their exploratory groove of elongated jams that spiral into cosmic splendor.
It was just last year when Nilüfer Yanya released her much recent record, but this week she dropped a new single that follows her righteous sound of big guitar riffs, chugging rhythms, and an overall dynamic sound that brings the bing time thrills of rock with a more nuanced approach that always delivers on something all her own.
For her latest, Indigo De Souza turns up the heat to bring us a blistering new jam that propels with serious motion and unabashed confidence. Sparkling keys bubble up from below the otherwise rocking vibes as she leads her band through a pumped up track that isn’t afraid to rip into a killer solo to cash in on the energy it’s built from the opening chords.
Even though her last album slid into shoegaze and dream-pop territory, Avalon Emerson hails from a DJ background and is readying a new project that heads back in that direction. “On It Goes” is built around a Storm Queen vocal sample and that guides the track through the motions of quintessential dance and party music.
Slinky silky guitar licks and laid down with an ultra shine on the smooth new slow jam from EXUM. “Losing Focus” is a luxurious gem that glides with a sultry demeanor, acoustic guitars wafting in the background behind a simple drum beat. The vocals are ghostly, singing sweetly over the suave melody and featherweight groove.
