Summer is here (for the most part) and there are plenty of great new tunes ready to help you ease into the prime season. Experimental post-rockers caroline are back with their sophomore record, caroline 2, and it features Caroline Polachek on one of its tracks. It’s a smart follow-up that furthers the band’s curious nature of intricate and dynamic song structures that never follow expectations.
Unsurprisingly, Miley Cyrus has enlisted some top talent to help bring her new album to life and the killer queen has once again nailed her aesthetic while challenging her old ways without compromising any of her talents. Fully in control of her sound and journey, she’s back to once again deliver some hits just in time for the warmer weather.
On his second new record in two years, Alan Sparhawk has brought on Trampled by Turtles to be his backing band as he continues to explore his solo sound after the end of Low. Successfully making strides towards something his own and not a repeat of his past, his sophomore record is another example of his journey towards his next chapter as an independent artist.
The singles leading up to the fifth studio album from Swedish pop vocalist Sally Shapiro have enhanced her lush disco sounds and bring the heat to the dance floor. Setting the stage for a chic and stunting blast of euphoric beats and bumping grooves, she’s ready to take on the party to the next level.
Psyched-out garage rocker Ty Segall has been going a mile a minute for two decades and is showing no signs of slowing down. Possession is a move towards poppier sounds, but with his obvious flourishes peppered throughout. The National’s frontman Matt Berninger is also back this week with his second solo album of crisp, effective songwriting and his signature vocal work.
On the second single from the hugely anticipated new album from Lorde, the singer cools things off after the party that was “What Was That” and instead goes for something much more subdued and forlorn. It’s an introspective number and not the rager many may be hoping for as we yearn for a Lorde Summer.
Next month, HAIM will release their fourth studio album and this week the sisters have returned with another single, “Tale me back.” This is a new side to the band that we’ve never heard before, but one that unlocks a whole new power and expands their range in an unexpected, yet urgent new way and only ups the ante for what the album has in store for us. It’s a millennial throwback that instantly induces nostalgia to time of AOL away messages and Live Journal posts.
At long last, Clipse are back and are preparing to drop their first new album in 12 years and it’s entirely produced by Pharrell. Today they’ve dropped their sinister and biting comeback single “Ace Trumpets” which brings the intensity from the first beat drop and has the brothers back in fine form to remind us of their highly calibrated rhymes that flow with a toxic twist.
While rumors swirl about a possible Radiohead tour in the UK and Europe this fall, Thom Yorke has released a new song for the Apple TV show Smoke. This is more of a droning tune with Yorke’s typical croon over delicate melody and eerie piano as a twinkling buzz hovers in the background.
The deadpan, angular guitar, post-punk group Wet Leg has a lot riding on their second studio album. After gaining critical acclaim with their debut single, there’s a lot rising on album number two and the band seems up to the pressure as they focus in sharply with the direct new tune, “CPR.”
Earlier this year, Unknown Mortal Orchestra released a record full of sprawling instrumental psychedelic tracks that indulged in their more experimental side. Now the band is readying a new EP that’s closer in line with their typical jams, still spacey, but with a bit more structure and vocals as led by the new song “Boys with the Characteristics of Wolves.”
The newly formed grouping of Nate Mercereau, Josh Johnson, and Carlos Niño are set to release their debut recording later this summer on the legendary label Blue Note Records. The first preview of the album, “Hawk Dreams,” is an expansive and exploratory song that gets lost in an ambient groove of endless wonder.
