May is coming out the gates hot with some solid new releases this week led by punk bands Iceage and Squid. Iceage are back with album number five and have continued to push their sound to new limits and test out new territory. Based on the singles, they’ve really taken on a punk version of the Rolling Stones’ swagger giving us some steaming, blues-heavy rockers that are just as visceral as the band’s hardcore past. Squid are here with their debut and like their peers in their scene black midi and Black Country, New Road, they’re also bringing a new twist to post-punk scorchers.
nasimiYu is back with her first full-length in seven years combining glitch-pop, indie rock, jazz for unique sounds all her own. This vibrant, effervescent record is sure to stoke the flames of fans from all over the spectrum as this record fuses together so many different sounds culminating in a wonderfully refreshing album.
Mitski has soundtracked a new graphic novel called This is Where We Fall by writer Chris Miskiewicz and artist Vincent Kings. Sufjan Stevens wraps up his five part ambient collection called Convocations with the final installment, Incantation.
Modest Mouse announced their first new album in six years, their longest stretch between records and the first we’ve heard from Issac Brock in quite some time. It’s called The Golden Casket and features the stomping lead single “We Are Between.” HEALTH and Nine Inch Nails released a collaborative track called “ISN’T EVERYONE” and Lydia Ainsworth shared another new splendid song from her upcoming record. This one is appropriately titled “Cosmic Dust.”
The first posthumous release from MF DOOM drops today and it’s a collaboration with Czarface that was only announced earlier this week. Angel Olsen has shared a new box set containing her two previous albums All Mirrors and Whole New Mess plus an additional album of unreleased material.
In other news, Weezer and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are also releasing new records today in case you’re in need for some ‘90s nostalgia.
