It feels like a really weird time to be writing about music after the heartbreaking defeat many of us have experienced this week and the fear that looms ahead. If you voted for Trump and support any of his policies or ideas, you can unsubscribe from this newsletter. You’re not my audience and you’re not someone I want in my community, online or otherwise.
Shockingly, it was not a popular week to release new music so this edition of Gold Soundz is pretty short. I hope people are doing their best, whatever that may look like, and practicing some self-care as we prepare the long journey ahead of us. In times like this, I remind myself to be grateful for community. I will be looking for ways to do my part of showing support for those I love. I hope everyone else is doing the same.
Experimental dup The Body have delivered their latest album and the timing of its release just as we turn the clocks back and enter a time of prolonged darkness (not to mention the new state of the country), feels not like a coincidence, but a carefully laid plan to welcome us into the void.
If extreme music is too much for these times, Claire Rousay’s music can be a balm for the soul with distilled ambient sounds that can be a source of comfort and ease. Her latest, The Bloody Lady, features the reimagined score she wrote for Viktor Kubal's 1980 eponymous animated film.
The eighth volume of the Mile Davis bootleg series includes all the music made at the 1963 Festival Mondial Du Jazz in Antibes and the 1964 Paris Jazz Festival. Featuring over four hours of never before heard recordings, these sessions include Miles’ Second Great Quartet and comprise a crucial time in his prolific career.
It should go without saying that Refused’s record The Shape of Punk to Come is an all-time favorite of mine since the name of this Substack is derived from it (as well as Ornette Coleman) and this week the post-hardcore legends are reissuing this landmark record and there’s an added tribute album as well.
Electronic artist SBTRKT has been releasing a bunch of one-off singles recently and they all have very similar artwork. It’s unclear if there’s an album on the way, but in the meantime, “Turn Your Heart Around” is a glitchy dance track with a lot of movement and bouncy beats.
