Well, October has been an absolutely stacked month with some of the year’s best music getting released in the past few weeks so today’s a bit of a breather, but still includes some big highlights. Sophie Allison returns today with her latest album as Soccer Mommy and after working with Oneohtrix Point Never behind the boards on her last record, this one is more of a return to the homespun sound of her earlier work.
Dance act Two Shell have made some big moves in the techno scene and their debut full-length aims to get us back on the floor for some hard pumping beats while still relishing in the secrets of their never-revealed identity. Their image has always been playful and intriguing, but they’re still ready to be taken seriously as one of the best new acts in the scene.
Art-rockers Fievel is Glauque released their last album in 2022, but today they’re back again with another collection of songs that was “recorded live in triplicate” and further pushes the boundaries of their wildly imaginable sound as the drift between rock, jazz, and other experimental scenes to make something uniquely their own while still refusing to settle into one defining genre.
Iceage frontman Elias Rønnenfelt has been making solo appearances for a while, but this marks his first official release under his own name as an individual artist. While his main group has successfully navigated their path from post-punk to a country-infused take on the genre, Rønnenfelt continues to strive for something all his own with this rather reserved and minimal approach that reveals his range without compromising his accomplishments.
As the leader of queer-pop group MUNA, Katie Gavin has been playing to massive crowds, but as she takes a step away to drop her solo record (which her bandmates have enthusiastically endorsed), we’re given a new glimpse into her world and her wide variety of talents.
The supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young made their live debut only two days before their performance at Woodstock in 1969 and now we’re finally getting a live record from their first ever tour that followed in the months after the festival. Taken from four sets over the course of two nights, this live album from the infamous Fillmore East showcases the band at their early peak and gives us new versions of many iconic songs.
Last month, the nonprofit Red Hot announced a new 46-track compilation called TRAИƧA which will feature new music from Sade, André 3000, Adrienne Lenker, Grouper, Fleet Foxes, Perfume Genius, Laura Jane Grace, and tons more. While the full release isn’t out until November, today you can buy TRAИƧA: Selects which features the fist new song from Sade in six years, a 26+ minute ambient piece from André 3000, as well as the tracks from L’Rain, Beverly Glenn-Copland + Sam Smith, Lauren Auder + Wendy & Lisa.
It might be for our collective best to just forget Joker 2 happened and move our attention on over to new music from Lady Gaga. After the forgettable companion album to her latest film, we’re given a much welcomed return to vintage Gaga on “Disease,” the first single from her highly anticipated new record coming in 2025.
A new era of Tyler, the Creator is upon us. This coming Monday (October 28), he’ll release his new album Chromakopia and this week, he gave us the first preview via the new song “Noid.” It’s another buzzing tune that unveils the latest side of the artist as he verges into territory that could belong to Yves Tumor with his blown-out guitar tones and rock hard drumming.
The duo of Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington are best known as Darkside and this week they announced their first North American tour in eleven years. To accompany this news, they shared the one-off new song “Graucha Max” which takes is more of their spun-out electronic goodness that is rich with grooves and wild textures.
Next year, Sharon Van Etten will release a new album, but instead of billing it as a new solo record, the artist says this one was written with her entire band, The Attachment Theory. On the lead single “Afterlife,” we are treated to a widescreen sound that captures the feelings of some of her biggest songs with a synth-heavy treatment and cinematic appeal.
