September rolls on with a new week of great releases spread across numerous genres, making it likely that no matter where your taste lies, something new today should strike your fancy.
The legendary noise-rock outfit the Jesus Lizard haven’t released a new album in twenty-six years, but that all changes today. Rack is the brutal and fiery return from one of the most punishing and dominant noise makers of the ‘90s and it’s a pleasure to see them back in full force.
On her third album, Nilüfer Yanya continues to bring big alt-rock and grunge hooks to her guitar-driven sound and her chops have only grown over time. Continuing her streak of writing songs that really grab hold of the listener with a tightened grip, her blasts of energized riffs and calculated rhythms make her one of the most intriguing song writers in the game.
While his last full-length was the brilliant collaboration with the late, great Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, Floating Points returns today with his first new solo album since 2019’s excellent Crush. This time around he’s back to his old habits of hard hitting electronics and dance-ready numbers that’ll have your ready to rave in no time.
In 2021, Porches came back with a new record that brought them back into the indie conversation like it was 2016 all over again. Now, Aaron Maine has returned again with another new album that hopes to pick that narrative once again and push him back into the people’s minds with his glassy and dreamy melodies.
Earlier this week, The War on Drugs kicked-off their tour with The National and today they’ve shared their second live album, smartly titled Live Drugs Again and it’s another document that captures the band’s incredible spirit while gracing the stage and offers up new takes on their classic heartland rock sound.
The new album from The Weeknd is imminent. So far he’s only shared the title, Hurry Up Tomorrow, and now he’s dropped a new single, “Dancing in the Flames.” This is a bonafide pop song to the utmost degree, an unbelievable leap from his mixtape days, but something that will surely be monumental on the charts.
In 2022, fka twigs released her mixtape Caprisongs, but her last album was 2019’s Magdelene (I’ll let you decide the difference). Last week she announced her third album and today we’re given the new song “Eusexua.” The new record comes after twigs’ move to Prague and she states that “the album isn’t techno but the spirit is there” and the second half of the song certainly showcases that influence with vibrant colors.
With the release date of his first solo album in almost a decade quickly approaching, Christopher Owens has shared yet another single and it continues to provide the hope that the former Girls singer might have regained his footing as a generational talent.
The follow-up to Dawn Richard and Spencer Zahn’s ambient collaborative album Pigments is on the way and this week the duo shared a third track from the record. It’s another gorgeous piece that embodies a vibe all of its own and recognizes the talents of Dawn far beyond her mark as an R&B star and just an overall creative wonder with unlimited potential.
Sophie Allison, best known as Soccer Mommy, has said that her new album will be more of a return to the basics after she made the avant-guard decision to enlist Oneohtrix Point Never as the producer on her last record. The third single sounds like classic Soccer Mommy and hits right in the pocket of her core sonic template.
The rise in popularity of long-time IDM producer Four Tet over the past few years has really been something to watch. While always a favorite of the underground rave scene, it’s been wild to see him headline places like Madison Square Garden and Coachella alongside his pals Skrillex and Fred again.. Even though he just released his great new album earlier in the year, he dropped a new single with pop star Ellie Goulding just this week.
It’s another pumping rock track from Wild Pink this week as he shares yet another heartland tune that encapsulates Americana beautifully with phrases like “freedom fries” and when referencing the Montreal Expos move to Washington D.C. Rich, textured guitars plow the way on this one and along with the other singles it’s suggesting one the band’s best records to date.
It’s not too often we see collaborations like this, but metal titans Mastodon and Lamb of God have teamed-up for the new song “Floods of Triton” and it’s the thrashing blast of power you’d expect from these two behemoths as their roaring riffs and punishing rhythms really take flight with ultimate power.
When he’s not rapping as one half of Brooklyn’s best hip-hop duo Armand Hammer, E L U C I D brings his gruff and hard hitting bars to his own solo tracks and “THE WORLD IS DOG” brings more of his wicked beats to the table and gives us something harsh and distinct, where every word hits with a crushing purpose.
Just when we’d come to terms with Brat Summer, Charli XCX has made the push for Brat Fall with the announcement of the remix version of the record, excellently dubbed Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. Our first taste is the remix of “Talk talk” with Troye Sivan (her upcoming tour mate) and it’s an all out techno fever dream that ignites and results in absolute euphoric chaos.
