Temperatures across the country haven’t exactly cooled down yet and already September is bringing the heat with new music. Leading the pack this week is rising guitar wizard MJ Lenderman. At this point, I’m not sure if he’s better known as a solo artist following 2022’s excellent album Boat Songs or as the lead guitarist in alt-country band Wednesday, but either way, he’s back today with a brand new solo album that’s already produced some killer singles and will surely be one of the top rock albums of the year. He’s about to go on tour in support of it and has already announced another for 2025 at some larger venues. There’s also a new album from Wednesday reported to be on the way as well so MJ’s future looks pretty packed.
Ambient jazz artist Nala Sinephro delivered her visionary album Space 1.8 back in 2021 and today she follows it up with her sophomore record Endlessness. Further diving into the space of celestial sounds, this record has been described as a deep dive into the cycle of existence. The 45-minute album delicately spans 10 tracks with a continuous arpeggio playing throughout, creating an expansive, mesmerizing celebration of life cycles and rebirth.
Ten Days is the fourth studio album from one of the world’s biggest DJs of the moment, Fred again… Featuring some of his now standard collaborators like Skrillex and Four Tet, the record consists of ten tracks each representing a different day for the producer and special little moments that made significant impacts on his life.
Every time we get a new album from Peel Dream Magazine, the vibe changes. This remains true on their new album Rose Main Reading Room which takes on more lounge music styles as well as some proggy, gentle pop moments while still capturing some of their alternative fuzz.
Soon, Leon Bridges will release his fourth studio album and he’s claimed it’s the one he’s spent a lifetime making. The second single “Laredo” sweetens his soulful croon and dips back into his nostalgic charm while still highlighting modern inspirations.
It was only this January that Sleater-Kinney released their new album, but like so many others, they’ve quickly returned to announce a deluxe edition featuring some unreleased tracks. First up is “Here Today” which remarkably sounds a lot like their prime ‘90s material and is a welcome surprise after some of their more recent, streamlined and highly produced material.
Nearly a decade after his last release as Autre Ne Veut, Arthur Ashin is back making music under this moniker and this week announced his new album along with a new song. “About to Lose” sounds like it could’ve been written back in 2013, reviving the post-R&B sound he helped usher in back during its heyday.
The last album from post-hardcore greats Touché Amoré was 2020’s Laments, but that will change this fall when the group drops their new album and judging from their latest single “Hal Ashby,” it’s set to hit the same mark we’ve come to expect from these guys and will surely pack a devastating punch.
Mark K Nelson records glorious ambient music under the moniker Pan-American and earlier this year teamed up with Kramer on an excellent new album. Now he’s back with a one-off single that continues to embody his captivating work with meditative melodies and long, drawn-out rhythms that float into the either with nothing but ease.
Next month, Kelly Lee Owens will release her new album Dreamstate and this week we got another preview via the new single, “Higher.” As the title would suggest it’s a upbeat tune that rises with promise as she repeats the key phrase “I float higher, higher, higher/ I go lighter, lighter, lighter.”
Phil Elverum originally gained some indie notoriety when he was releasing music as The Microphones before moving to the name Mount Eerie. Regardless of which name you associate with him, his homespun, lo-fi, fuzzed-out pop tunes have left an impact on so many. Now he’s set to return with his first new Mount Eerie record in half a decade and these first two songs are some of his most jaunty and straight-forward rock/pop songs to date, all while still embracing his specific and revered sound.
This week, TV on the Radio announced their first shows in five years as well as a twentieth anniversary edition of their debut studio album Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and it’ll feature extra tracks and demos such as “Final Fantasy,” an early take on one of my personal favorites, “Bomb Yourself.”
Last year, Slowdive released the great album everything is alive and to celebrate the first anniversary of its release, the group shared two remixes of the record’s highlight “kisses.” Daniel Avery and Grouper both stepped up to the plate and delivered wonderful new versions of the song, each putting their personal touch on the track to give it new life and changed perspective.
